Nerd alert! Let's learn about The S&W building! Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the S&W Building is widely recognized as a prime example of art-deco architecture from the 1920s. The building was designed by architect Douglas Ellington for the S&W Cafeteria chain based out of Charlotte. ⁠

The new Asheville S&W first opened to the public on July 15, 1929, and in the full-page newspaper article that ran that day, the president of the S&W, Frank Sherrill, said that “Asheville deserved the finest of our chains because Asheville is one of the showpieces of our country. Because Asheville has such a cosmopolitan population and has such a constant flow of visitors, it is natural that everybody who does any building here should try to do it in as an artistic manner as possible.”⁠

The mission of the S&W in 1929 was to serve locally sourced food, quickly, in a pristine, upscale environment that elevated the dining experience. Douglas Ellington’s two nephews now own the S&W building. They are both passionate about bringing the S&W back as the bustling center of community that it was many years ago. The revitalized interior now allows The S&W Market to offer counter service with delicious, fast and casual local food, just as it did when it first opened almost 100 years ago.

Who’s ready for Sunday FUN-DAY!? We’re open 11:30-7 and ready to make your Sunday a 10/10. Gourmand has some fun things lined up for their first Sunday open. Come join for live music, quiches and pork, duck, and Foie Gras meat pies. Plus, in celebration of Sunday Funday they’ll also be offering 10% off of all magnum bottles and also opening magnums to pour by the glass! See ya soon, Asheville. 🌞🥂

GOURMAND OPENS TOMORROW! Remember that beautiful space that’s on the left as soon as you walk into The S&W Market? It’s been completely transformed into Gourmand’s cheese, charcuterie, and wine shop and they’re opening tomorrow (Saturday!) at 11:30am. Follow them here @gourmandasheville

What to expect? Gourmand will have wines by-the-glass, baguette sandwiches, salads, light simple bites, including olives, tinned fish, pickled egg, and more.

During their wine bar hours (Thursday - Saturday starting at 4:30pm and Sunday from 11:30am - 7:00pm) Gourmand will offer more prepared foods, small plates that reflect seasonal market ingredients and the current selection of cheese and charcuterie, wines by-the-glass, etc.

On the retail side, they'll offer wines by-the-bottle, cheese & charcuterie sliced to order, tinned seafood, and various European products and accompaniments.

We’re SO incredibly excited to welcome owners Katie and Peyton to The S&W Market and can’t wait to experience all that Gourmand has to offer.

Monday - Thursday: 11:30am - 8:00pm (closed on Wednesdays)
Friday & Saturday: 11:30am - 10:00pm
Sunday: 11:30am - 7:00pm
